在知識爆炸、信息量膨脹的今天，閱讀能力的培養顯得尤為重要。因此，在目前的英語教學中，閱讀受到前所未有的重視，這對閱讀教材的編寫提出了更高的要求。作為英語專業的泛讀教材，必須克服過去那種文字陳舊、選材不寬、起點偏低、練習單一、課堂操作性差等一系列缺陷，以便更好更快地提高英語專業學生的閱讀能力，培養高質量的復合型、實用型英語人才。“新開端英語專業基礎課系列教材”之《閱讀拓展》就是在這一指導思想下編寫完成的。 “新開端英語專業基礎課系列教材”是安徽大學外語學院陳正發教授主持的安徽省“十一五”規劃教材項目。《閱讀拓展》是本系列教材的其中一套。本套教材共分4冊，取材廣泛，內容豐富，文體多樣，由淺入深。文章大都選自英語國家近年來出版的正規紙質圖書和網絡材料，其中很大一部分來自reager ms digest，the economist，www.nytimes.com，time等知名雜志和網站。題材涉及教育、科學、體育、文學、文化等諸多領域，體裁涵蓋報告文學、新聞通訊、科學小品、回憶錄、說明文、記敘文、議論文、散文、小說、傳記、演講等。所選文章經過精挑細選，長度適中，難度相宜，少數地方做了必要的改寫和刪減，適合英語專業**至第四學期教學使用，每學期一冊。 材料編排上，每個單元圍繞一個題材和一個閱讀技巧，提供三篇閱讀材料，按照通行的閱讀課模式把lesson a和lesson b分別分成pre-readig，while-reading，post-reading和extension activity四大模塊，合理設計課堂練習和課外活動，有針對性地訓練學生的閱讀技能，而lessonc則作為學生課后閱讀材料。值得一提的是，練習中安排了一定的口語和寫作活動，目的是整合學生語言能力，激發學生學習興趣，提高課堂教學效果。為了便于教學，與該書配套的教師用書為授課教師提供了較好的教學參考，使課堂教學易于組織和操作。
