《basic readers》是美國現代時期一套廣泛使用的標準化英語閱讀課本，在美國學校一直使用到20 世紀70 年代。《美國學校現代英語閱讀教材》由芝加哥大學閱讀研究專家、世界閱讀學會首任會長威廉·格雷教授與著名教材專家威廉·愛爾森共同編寫。從選文篇幅、詞匯難度、故事內容、課后練習、插圖使用等方面，編者都做了精心考量。《美國學校現代英語閱讀教材》以綜合培養學生的朗讀（oral reading）與默讀（silent reading）技巧為目的，讓孩子們學會閱讀，并通過閱讀為今后的人生階段打下基礎。對中國孩子來講，這是一套循序漸進地進行英語閱讀訓練的優秀讀本。適合從學前階段開始，向小學和中學階段擴展訓練。 本冊為第四級，從本冊開始正文中加注了單詞解釋，建議閱讀前可以先熟悉這些詞匯，以減少閱讀中因生詞而停頓的現象。課后也出現了閱讀理解問題，建議學生認真練習。有些題也可以口述做答，訓練英語思維與口語。同時提供配套英文朗讀免費下載，讓孩子在閱讀精彩故事的同時亦能更好練習英語發音。 this set of textbook readers was used in the schools of the united states till 1970s. it was the first reading series to enforce strict vocabulary control over selections. william s. gray, a renowned educational psychologist and reading authority from the university of chicago became a senior co-author with william h. elson in creating this series. the authors have attempted to provide an interesting, purposeful, and comprehensive reading course for children. to achieve this purpose the authors have assembled materials from the worldwide field of children’s favorite readings. thus basic reading attitudes and habits are developed through the purposeful use of interesting and significant content. using this series of readers, the children can learn to read first, and then read to learn in their future life.

BASIC READERS-美國學校現代英語閱讀教材-4 作者簡介
威廉· Ｓ· 格雷（William Scott Gray, 1885- 1960）美國芝加哥大學博士、教授，曾擔任芝加哥大學教育系研究生院閱讀研究專業主任，及世界閱讀學會首任會長。在近40 年的時間里，他一直是世界閱讀研究的權威學者。他在芝加哥大學的博士論文題為“小學閱讀的標準化測試”。他帶領的研究團隊，將閱讀技巧訓練與閱讀效果檢測相結合，并將學術研究成果應用于學校閱讀教材的編寫，《Basic Readers》便是他與另一位教育者和教材編寫專家合作的成果。 威廉· Ｈ· 愛爾森（William Harris Elson,1856-1935）出生于美國俄亥俄州卡洛爾，畢業于美國印第安納大學。作為一位教師與教育管理者，他在教育改革方面做出了很大貢獻。1907 年他建立了美國第一所技術高中。此外，他還是一位著名的教材編寫者，除本套教材外，他編寫了多套美國學校使用的現代教材。這些教材除美國外，在全球34 個國家銷售使用，累計銷量超過5000萬冊。
