For almost two centuries��the stories of magic and
myth gathered by the Brothers Grimm have been part
of the way children and adults learn about the vag-
aries of the real world. Cinderella, Rapunzel, Snow-
White, Hansel and Gretel, kirtle Red-Cap, and Briar-
Rose are only a few of more than 200 enchanting
characters included here. Lyrically translated, the
tales are presented just as Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
originally set them down: bold, primal, just frighten-
ing enough, and endlessly engaging.
 Jacob Grimm (1785-1863) and
 Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859),
 were German academics who were
 best-known for publishing collec-
 tions of folk tales and fairy talcs
  and for their work in linguistics,
 relating to how thc sounds in
words shift over time (Grimm's
Law). They arc among the best-
known story tellers of novellas
from Europe, allowing the wide-
spread knowledge of such tales as
Snow-White, Rapunzel , Cinderella,
and Hansel and Gretel.
