Unit 1 The Earth and the Universe
Background
學習地理，需要懂得地球的宇宙環境。本單元介紹太陽系、宇宙的起源，地球的演化歷史和月球的有關知識。學習本單元要有一定的想象力。
太陽系是銀河系的成員，銀河系與河外星系構成總星系，也就是目前人們所知的宇宙．銀河系是個旋臂狀的碟形，包含有2000億顆恒星。太陽位于其中的一個旋臂上。太陽*近的恒星鄰居是距其4.3光年的比鄰星。整個太陽系圍繞著銀河系的中心旋轉；太陽系的行星有8個：水星、金星、地球、火星、木星、土星、天王星、海王星。根據國際天文學聯合會大會于2006年8月24日在布拉格投票通過的新的行星定義，冥王星被編入“矮行星”。此外，太陽系還包括：行星的衛星、許多的彗星、小行星和流星體以及行星際物質。行星、大多數行星的衛星
和小行星都以相同的方向、接近圓形的軌道圍繞太陽轉動。大多數行星的自轉軸與黃道面垂直。
太陽系的行星可以分為類地行星和類木行星兩類。類地行星是離太陽*近的四個恒星：水星、金星、火星、地球。它們具有像地球一樣的高密度的巖石地表，因而得名。金星、地球、火星具有較濃的大氣，而水星卻幾乎沒有。木星、土星L天王星、海王星是類木行星（與木星相似）。
