夏日的一個傍晚，年輕的藝術教師沃爾特路遇一位從瘋人院逃出白衣女人，協助其逃至倫敦，發覺她與自己的學生勞拉長相相似。沃爾特與勞拉陷入熱戀，而勞拉原已許字珀西瓦爾·格萊特，沃爾特只好抽身他往。誰想格萊特騙得與勞拉成親，意在謀取錢財，而名為安娜的白衣女人從前也是陷入格萊特的圈套，被送進瘋入院的。不久，安娜病逝，格萊特暗中偷換二者的身份，以勞拉的名義葬埋安娜，而以安娜的身份將勞拉關進了瘋人院……

柯林斯（Wilkie Collins）（1824-1889）， was an English novelist， playwright， and author of short stories. He was hugely popular during the Victorian era and wrote 30 novels， more than 60 short stories， 14 plays， and over 100 nonfiction pieces. His best-known works are The Woman in White， The Moonstone， Armadale and No Name. Collins predicted the concept of the Cold War nuclear era， "I begin to believe in only one civilizing influence-the discovery one of these days of a destructive agent so terrible that War shall mean annihilation and men's fears will force them to keep the peace."
