經過近兩年的籌劃與實施，這套依據現行美國中小學教學大綱"共同核心標準"(Common Core State Standards) 而編寫的英語閱讀訓練讀本終于問世了！《跟美國學生同步練閱讀：Smart Reading》這套書是繼《美國語文》《英國語文》等經典教材之后，專門為國內準備留學的中小學生定制的全英文學習輔導讀本。對其他英語學習者，亦可適用。
《跟美國學生同步練閱讀：Smart Reading》按年級分冊，全套書共8冊，從教學標準與英語難度來講，完全對應現行美國小學1~8 年級。這套新讀本，將為中國學生評估自己的語言能力與知識水平提供一個較好的參照標準，為他們將來出國續讀全面打好基礎。
每一分冊均為65 課，其中包括52 篇閱讀文章和13 課復習訓練。適合學生制定一周一課的學習計劃。考慮到記憶的遺忘規律，每4 課之后，專門編寫了一次復習訓練課，讓學生翻閱和回想所學內容，幫助他們更好地記憶英文詞匯、掌握用法。愿"西方原版教材與經典讀物"系列圖書對準備出國留學，以及正在學習英語的讀者有所幫助！我們期待著傾聽每一位讀者的聲音！
About the Common Core
The Common Core is a set of high quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts (ELA).
In 2009 the state school chiefs and governors that comprise CCSSO and the NGA Center coordinated a state-led effort to develop the Common Core State Standards. Designed through collaboration among teachers, school chiefs, administrators, and other experts, the standards provide a clear and consistent framework for educators.
The standards were created to ensure that all students graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life, regardless of where they live. The standards define the knowledge and skills students should gain throughout their K-12 education in order to graduate high school prepared to succeed in entry-level careers, introductory academic college courses, and workforce training programs.
Forty-two states, the District of Columbia, four territories, have voluntarily adopted and are moving forward with the Common Core.

經過近兩年的出版策劃與編寫工作，這套以美國標準教學大綱(Common Core Standards)為藍本、由加拿大英語教師編寫的《Smart Reading》如愿問世了！這是多年前我們出版麥加菲《美國語文讀本》時的一個心愿--為國內準備留學的孩子們提供更多優質的現代西方學校教學資源，讓他們了解與之同齡的英語國家學生在讀些什么、學些什么……出國前多做些同步訓練，這樣既提升了孩子們的英語語言能力，又加強了對西方課程標準的了解與學習。當他們未來置身差異不小的"洋課堂"時，便會顯得更加從容和適應。
在風景優美、充滿英式風情的溫哥華島上， 我們的出版愿望一步步得以實現！為中國的未來留學生出版這一系列圖書，對我們也是一個挑戰。
一是如何尋找合適的英語為母語的作者。經過多次廣告發布、面談篩選之后，我們逐漸形成了一個固定的教師作者群體，他們任教于加拿大公立學校或英語教學機構，大多具有ESL 教學經驗，有些人還在亞洲國家中小學工作過多年，對亞洲學生的學習特點有所了解。這樣編寫出來的書才能更符合中國學生的需求。
二是采用什么樣的寫作標準。西方中小學沒有統編教材，但教輔圖書也不少。通過對這些圖書的收集整理和分析，我們找到了一個較為通用的教學標準--美國現代學校教育使用的"共同核心標準"(Common Core State Standards)。這一標準非常類似于中國的統一教學大綱。因此， 我們新出版的"Common Core"系列，將以這一目前美國學校流行的標準為指導，與現行美國學校的教學標準一致，同時參考了其他英語國家的教學標準與要求，供未來赴所有英語國家留學的孩子們使用。
三是編寫內容的現代感。為了提高學生的學習興趣，我們要求作者緊密結合西方現代生活與新技術廣泛應用時代，讓讀者接觸到*時興的英語素材、在真實世界里學習英語和課程。因此，"Common Core"系列圖書，在內容上盡量滿足學生對新知的認識與理解。
四是難度標準的把握。由于這一系列是為未來出國留學孩子所準備，所以我們采用全英文編寫方式，讓學生適應全英文環境下進行閱讀與學習。難度保持與英語國家各年級的標準一致，這樣讓讀者真實了解西方學生的水平。中國學生在使用時，可以根據自己的實際水平，選擇合適難度的分冊，循序漸進地加以提高。
對于"共同核心標準"這一概念，中國家長和孩子可能有些陌生。它是美國、加拿大等國家的幼兒園和中小學所使用的統一教學標準。在美國和加拿大，學校教育系統是由各個州（省）政府所監管。這意味著，阿肯色州與俄勒岡州的孩子們在學校所學的內容會不太相同。當他完成K12 教育，繼續接受更高階段的教育或步入職業生涯時，如果所受教育采用不一樣的標準，便由此產生一些問題。尤其當某個家庭從一個州搬遷至另一個州時，孩子的續讀或許會出現一些麻煩。"共同核心標準"正是著力于解決這類問題。它是由美國一些著名教育家與政界、商界很有影響力的人物極力倡導而制定，以盡量彌合各州之間的教育差異。目前為此，美國42 個州、哥倫比亞地區、4 個領地都在使用這一教學標準。比爾·蓋茨先生也極力贊助這一標準的推廣。
共同核心標準，涵蓋了幼兒園至12 年級，旨在培養學生的批判性思考能力，并傳授各年級的學科知識。讓他們學會設立問題、自我思考，將所學內容進行關聯和牽引。共同核心標準，首先注重的是教學生如何思考，然后是學習內容。注重記憶基礎之上的知識與技能訓練和相互關聯。這一標準具有以下特點：
1. 建立在大量研究與事實基礎之上而制定；
2. 標準清晰、易于理解并保持教學的延續性；
3. 結合未來的大學教育與職業發展；
4. 豐富的內容與知識應用，高度訓練學生的思考能力；
5. 融匯了各州教學標準的優勢；
6. 參考了其他國家的教育優點，讓學生未來更好地適應全球化經濟與社會。
目前，共同核心標準包括兩類課程：一是英語語言藝術（English Language Arts，簡稱"ELA"），另一門是數學。ELA 又包括閱讀、寫作、聽說等各個領域。這些語言能力，也是學習其他科目的關鍵，如科學、歷史與信息技術等。所以它不是一門簡單的英語科目。數學大綱，不是重點強調記憶，而是讓學生在訓練技能的同時，能獲取解決數學問題的答案。要求學生運用數學知識和技能，解決真實世界中的問題。因此數學對學生來講，會變得更加有趣而充滿真實感。
圍繞"共同核心標準"，Holybird Publishing 利用北美的教師資源，策劃出版了三個系列：《Smart Reading》、《Smart Math》、《Smart Science》。讓中國學生學起來更有目標和參照標準。在完全按照美國"共同核心標準"編寫的同時，我們也參考了其他英語國家的教學標準與難度，因此對所有未來在西方留學的孩子都可適用，幫助他們提升英語水平、建立自我學習策略，訓練思考能力。夯實了這些基礎，未來學習便會游刃有余！
